Allah Rakha Rahman is an Indian Tamil film composer, record composer, record producer, musician and singer. That is about all I know of him other than I like his musical compositions. He often uses other artist in his work and so the compilation I own of his stuff is really diverse.
This is the album that I own:
You can listen to samples of this album on itunes and probably other places as well. Check it out, maybe Indian music is totally your thing!
Ethiopian Jazz

I was reading Ebony magazine earlier this week and found a review of this album:
Inspiration Information, Vol. 3
This album is a collaboration of Ethiopian Jazz artist Mulatu Astatge and the UK band Heliocentrics. I personally really love Ethopian Jazz and this album is awesome!!!! I highly recommend this album to anyone that is a jazz lover or a lover of things Ethiopian. You can hear samples of this album if you click on the album cover, it will take you to the Amazon page.
This ain’t your daddy’s jazz album but it is awesome in it’s own rite. Classic Ethiopian jazz blended with the ecclectic sound of the Heliocentrics. This is a purchase worthy album, I don’t think that you will regret opening your wallet for this.

Music Monday on Thursday this week, it has been one of those weeks.
Amon Tobin
Amon Tobin’s music is categorized as Electronica, and I would say that is true. I wanted to share Amon with you all but the thing is, I am not sure how to describe his music to you. I love it personally, but cannot put into words why. So I am just going to give you some links and hope that you listen to some of his stuff. Perhaps once you have heard his rocking music you will understand why I am tongue tied.
Those are a couple of Amon Tobin’s albums, you can listen to samples from the pages I linked the pictures to.
My hope is that once I have wordpress running on my my own website I will be able to have a music player and then you will be able to listen to the music that I write about. For now just click the links and listen to samples.
Enjoy!

Sufjan Stevens
Sufjan Stevens is amazing!!! His music is diverse, his lyrics are outstanding, and he just plain rocks in my opinion.
Here are some of the albums that we listen to and love:
This Christmas album is probably one of my favortite Christmas albums. He does the best version of Holy, Holy, Holy I have ever heard, sometimes it makes me cry, don’t tell anyone:)
Sufjan Stevens record label is Asthmaic Kitty Records. Maybe you will find some other artists that are pleasing to your ear.
Again you can probably visit Pandora or last.fm to find some samples of Sufjan’s music. Just don’t pirate it, he is worth buying!
Enjoy listening!

Hungry Fathers
Hungry Fathers is a band that is close to my heart, it is the band that Brian is in. I figured that I could not review music and not include my husbands own band so here it goes.

The title of Hungry Fathers first album is “Will The Lightning Bug Return?”. This album would definitely fall into the genre of rock, and is pretty upbeat and in general a good album I think, I am biased though:)
If you would like to hear some of the Hungry Fathers music you can visit their website.
Enjoy listening!

Amadou and Mariam
“The blind couple from Mali”

Amadou and Mariam are considered to be African Blues/Jazz artists. Since the late 1990s Amadou & Mariam produce music that mixes traditional Mali sound with rock guitars, Syrian violins, Cuban trumpets, Egyptian ney, Colombian trombones, Indian tablas and Dogon percussion. All these elements put together have been referred to as “Afro-blues”. (Wikipedia)
We came across Adamou and Mariam while listen to Sound Opinions, an awesome Public Radio show that airs Saturday in Chicago. We loved their music after only listening for a few minutes, we have been very happy with the two albums we have purchased so far.

Amadou and Mariam make happy music. They are rocking guitar music, they are funky, fresh music, they are world music, Amadou and Mariam are dynamic, and unique. If you would like to hear some of their music you can visit their website and stream their music. Just click on the Albums section of the site on the right side of the page.
Enjoy listening!

Blossom Dearie
(April 28, 1924 – February 7, 2009) was an American jazz singer and pianist, often performing in the bebop genre and known for her distinctive girlish voice (Wikipedia).
I heard about Blossom Dearie while listening to NPR, and right away I knew I needed to own some of her music. I love vocal jazz. I love how it makes me feel: like I am in some other time, mellow, happy and uncomplicated.
I listen to Blossom while I am making dinner, cooking breakfast, or just anytime I want to feel a little lighter and brighter. I really enjoy her as does Brian. We are both Jazz fans anyway so this was a natural fit for us. Brian loves the classic jazz guys and bands as do I but I also have an affinity for the women of jazz as well.

If you want to hear some of Blossom’s music the best places I can point you to would be;
If you love those classic jazz tunes then I recommend giving Blossom Dearie a listen, I think you will like what you hear!
Enjoy listening.

God Is An Astronaut
God Is An Astronaut came to us through last.fm, we are glad they made the recommendation and now we are passing it along to you.
This group is categorized as electonica/ambient on itunes but last.fm categorizes it as Post Rock. I find the this music to be fairly mellow, Brian on the other hand does not. Perhaps I find it mellow because there are no lyrics and it can easily fade into the background. The album we are currently listening to is;
A few of the songs that we really dig are;
-All is violent, all is bright
-A deafening distance
-Forever lost
To hear their music or find a show you can click on the orange image at the top of the page, it will take you to God Is An Astronauts Myspace page.
Have fun listening!

Neko Case

You can also see where she is touring, She is in CHICAGO on the April 24th at the Chicago Theater. Click on the picture below to order tickets for anyone of her shows that is not sold out.
A few of the songs that we love from Middle Cyclone;
All of them!
Here are some songs with great lyrics though;
THIS TORNADO LOVES YOU
Neko Case 2008
MY LOVE I AM THE SPEED OF SOUND
I LEFT THEM MOTHERLESS, FATHERLESS
THEIR SOULS DANGLING INSIDE-OUT FROM THIER MOUTHS…
BUT IT’S NEVER ENOUGH
I WANT YOU
I CARVED YOUR NAME ACROSS THREE COUNTIES
AND GROUND IT IN WITH BLOODY HIDES
BROKEN NECKS WILL LINE THE DITCH
TILL YOU “STOP IT! STOP IT! STOP THIS MADNESS!”
I WANT YOU
I HAVE WAITED WITH A GLACIER’S PATIENCE
SMASHED EVERY TRANSFORMER WITH EVERY TRAILER
TILL NOTHING WAS STANDING
SIXTY-FIVE MILES WIDE
BUT STILL YOU ARE NOWHERE, STILL YOU ARE NOWHERE, NOWHERE IN SIGHT
COME OUT TO MEET ME, RUN OUT TO MEET ME
COME INTO THE LIGHT
CLIMB THE BOXCARS TO THE ENGINE
THROUGH THE SMOKE AND TO THE SKY
YOUR RAILS COULD ALWAYS OUTRUN MINE SO I
I PICKED THEM UP AND CRASHED THEM DOWN
IN A MOMENT CLOSE TO NOW
CAUSE I MISS, I MISS, I MISS, I MISS
HOW YOU’D SIGH YOURSELF TO SLEEP
WHEN I’D RAKE THE SPRINGTIME ACROSS YOUR SHEETS
CHORUS
MY LOVE, I’M AN OWL ON THE SILL IN THE EVENING
BUT MORNING FINDS YOU
STILL WARM AND BREATHING
THIS TORNADO LOVES YOU, WHAT WILL MAKE YOU BELIEVE ME?
FYI- This song is literal-it is about what would happen if a tornado loved you and was in pursuit of you. I think that the lyrics in parentheses are perhaps the voice of the person that is being pursued.
THE NEXT TIME YOU SAY FOREVER
Neko Case 2008 I HEAR THE TINIEST SPARKS AND THE TENDEREST SOUNDS
DRIVING MUSIC
DROWNING THE SOUND
WALTZING WITH THE HAIRS UPON MY ARMS
THEN YOUR FIGHT OR FLIGHT ALARM
THEN YOU TREMBLE
THEN YOU STUMBLE
AND YOU SCRAPE UP YOUR PALMS
I CAN’T STAY HERE TO HOLD YOUR HAND
I’VE BEEN AWAY FOR SO LONG
I’VE LOST MY TASTE FOR HOME
AND THAT’S A DIRTY, FALLOW FEELING…
TO BE THE DANGLING CEILING
FROM WHEN THE ROOF CAME CRASHING DOWN
PEELING IN THE HEAT
VANISH IN THE RAIN
THE NEXT TIME YOU SAY “FOREVER”
I WILL PUNCH YOU IN YOUR FACE
JUST BECAUSE YOU DON’T BELIEVE IT
DOESN’T MEAN I DIDN’T MEAN IT
YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN I’LL SHOW YOU THE NEVER
Listen to Neko and maybe you’ll become a fan!
